Morphological Variation of the Incisive Canal Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the incisive canal among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, course, and anatomical configuration. The incisive canal is an important neurovascular passage within the anterior maxilla that connects the nasal cavity with the oral cavity through the incisive foramen and transmits branches of the nasopalatine nerve and accompanying vessels. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding variations in the anterior maxilla and may have clinical relevance in implant placement, oral surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and the interpretation of maxillofacial imaging. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the incisive canal among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes and configurations of the incisive canal, determining its measurable dimensions, assessing variations in its course and orientation, and documenting the frequency of the observed morphological patterns within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the incisive canal will be obtained using standardized imaging or anatomical procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess variations in the observed characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the incisive canal among the undergraduate students studied. Variations may be observed in its shape, diameter, length, orientation, and course, with some participants potentially demonstrating distinct anatomical configurations. Differences in the frequency and distribution of these morphological patterns may also be observed, providing information on the extent of anatomical variability of the incisive canal within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, dental practitioners, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and treatment of the anterior maxillary region. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding incisive canal anatomy and may support preoperative assessment, dental implant planning, surgical procedures, interpretation of imaging findings, and anatomical education. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the incisive canal among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the incisive canal, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of its morphological variability.
