Morphological Variation of the Carpal Tunnel Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the carpal tunnel among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, and anatomical configuration. The carpal tunnel is an osteofibrous passageway at the wrist formed by the carpal bones and the flexor retinaculum, through which the median nerve and flexor tendons pass into the hand. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding anatomical variation and for supporting the assessment of conditions and clinical procedures involving the wrist and median nerve. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the carpal tunnel among young adults using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape of the carpal tunnel, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting differences in its anatomical configuration, and comparing selected characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the carpal tunnel will be obtained using standardized imaging or anatomical procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed differences and associations. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the carpal tunnel, including variations in its shape, length, width, depth, and overall configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed in selected dimensions or morphological characteristics. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the carpal tunnel, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
