Bilateral Variation in Hand Phalanx Morphology Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in hand phalanx morphology among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the anatomical characteristics of the phalanges between the right and left hands. The phalanges are essential skeletal components of the fingers that contribute to hand structure, movement, grip, and fine motor function. Understanding variations in their morphology is important for describing normal anatomical patterns and may provide useful information for clinical, anthropological, radiological, and forensic applications involving the hand. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the hand phalanges and determine the extent of variation between the right and left sides. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the phalanges, determining their measurable dimensions, documenting variations in shape and configuration, and comparing the observed characteristics and dimensions of corresponding phalanges between the right and left hands of the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The morphology and dimensions of the hand phalanges will be assessed using standardized anthropometric, osteological, or imaging-based procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether significant differences exist between corresponding phalanges on the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the morphology and dimensions of the hand phalanges among the participants. Differences may be observed in the length, breadth, shape, configuration, and other measurable characteristics of corresponding phalanges on the right and left hands. Some bilateral differences may be statistically significant, while other characteristics may demonstrate relatively similar patterns between the two sides. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, orthopedic professionals, hand surgeons, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, and forensic anthropologists. The study may provide reference information for understanding bilateral anatomical variation in the hand, interpreting radiological findings, supporting clinical assessment and selected orthopedic procedures, and contributing to anthropometric and forensic evaluations involving hand skeletal morphology. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern and extent of bilateral variation in hand phalanx morphology among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used when assessing phalangeal morphology and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of bilateral skeletal variation in the hand.
