Bilateral Variation in Femoral Condyle Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The femoral condyles are prominent anatomical structures at the distal end of the femur that participate in the formation and movement of the knee joint. Their dimensions and morphology may vary among individuals and between the right and left sides, with such differences being relevant to knee biomechanics, joint stability, radiological assessment, and orthopaedic procedures. Investigating bilateral variation in femoral condyle dimensions can therefore provide useful information on the structural characteristics of the distal femur. The study will assess bilateral variation in femoral condyle dimensions among undergraduate students. It will specifically determine selected dimensions of the medial and lateral femoral condyles on the right and left sides and compare the measurements obtained to identify patterns of bilateral variation among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Selected dimensions of the femoral condyles will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures, with appropriate imaging or osteological assessment where necessary. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine significant differences between corresponding measurements on the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal observable bilateral differences in selected dimensions of the femoral condyles among the participants. Variations may be identified in parameters such as condylar height, breadth, anteroposterior dimensions, and other relevant measurements between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to provide anatomical information on the extent of bilateral variation in the distal femur. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of knee-related conditions. The information may contribute to improved understanding of distal femoral anatomy, interpretation of radiological findings, surgical planning, knee joint reconstruction, and appropriate assessment of anatomical variation. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern of bilateral variation in femoral condyle dimensions among undergraduate students. It is expected that the findings will contribute to anatomical reference data and provide a basis for further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of bilateral differences in distal femoral morphology.
