Bilateral Differences in Mastoid Process Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral differences in mastoid process dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the comparison of the right and left mastoid processes. The mastoid process is a prominent projection of the temporal bone located posterior to the external acoustic meatus and serves as an attachment site for several muscles of the head and neck. Its morphology and dimensions may vary between individuals and between the two sides of the skull, making its assessment relevant to the understanding of temporal bone anatomy, craniofacial variation, radiological interpretation, and surgical procedures involving the mastoid region. The study aims to determine and compare the dimensions of the right and left mastoid processes among undergraduate students. It will specifically assess selected dimensions of the mastoid processes on both sides, determine the magnitude of bilateral differences, and identify the distribution of right-sided, left-sided, and approximately symmetrical measurements among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible undergraduate students, while mastoid process dimensions will be obtained using suitable imaging-based or osteological assessment methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. Measurements from the right and left sides will be recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be used to determine the significance of observed bilateral differences. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in mastoid process dimensions between the right and left sides among the participants. The findings may demonstrate differences in selected dimensions, although the degree and direction of bilateral variation are expected to differ across individuals. The results will provide additional information on the pattern of anatomical asymmetry within the temporal bone and contribute to the understanding of normal cranial morphological variation. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, forensic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the temporal bone and mastoid region. The study may provide anatomical reference information that can support interpretation of cranial imaging, identification of normal bilateral variation, surgical planning, and further research on temporal bone morphology. The study will conclude by documenting the bilateral differences in mastoid process dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized measurement procedures be adopted in anatomical and radiological studies of the mastoid process and that further investigations involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on bilateral temporal bone morphology.
