Association Between Sitting Height and Spinal Flexibility Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines the association between sitting height and spinal flexibility among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the relationship between trunk dimensions and functional mobility of the vertebral column. Sitting height represents the vertical distance from the sitting surface to the vertex of the head and provides an indication of trunk and spinal dimensions. Spinal flexibility refers to the ability of the vertebral column and associated soft tissues to permit movement within an appropriate range, making the assessment of both characteristics relevant to understanding variations in body proportions and spinal function among young adults. The study will assess sitting height and spinal flexibility among undergraduate students and determine the association between both variables. The specific objectives will include measuring the sitting height of the participants, assessing spinal flexibility using a standardized flexibility procedure, examining variations in the measured characteristics among the participants, and determining the strength and direction of the association between sitting height and spinal flexibility. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Sitting height will be measured using a standardized anthropometric procedure with appropriate equipment and positioning, while spinal flexibility will be assessed using a suitable validated flexibility assessment method under controlled conditions. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the association between the assessed variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in sitting height and spinal flexibility among the participants. An association may be observed between sitting height and spinal flexibility, although the strength and direction of the relationship may vary among individuals. Differences in spinal flexibility may also be observed across participants with different sitting-height measurements, while the findings will describe association without implying a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, sports scientists, occupational therapists, orthopaedic practitioners, and other professionals involved in anthropometric and musculoskeletal assessment. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding the relationship between trunk dimensions and spinal mobility and may support functional assessment, ergonomic evaluation, exercise planning, physical performance studies, and musculoskeletal research among young adults. The study will conclude by documenting sitting height and spinal flexibility and determining their observed association among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anthropometric and flexibility assessment procedures be used when evaluating body proportions and spinal mobility, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on the relationship between anthropometric characteristics and spinal function.
