Association Between Hand Dominance and Grip Strength Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the association between hand dominance and grip strength among undergraduate students. Hand dominance refers to the preferential use of one hand for performing routine and skilled activities, while grip strength represents the force generated during hand gripping and is an important indicator of upper limb functional performance. Understanding the association between these characteristics may provide useful information on functional differences between dominant and non-dominant hands among young adults. The study will determine hand dominance among the participants and assess grip strength in both hands. Hand dominance will be established using a structured assessment of preferred hand use during selected everyday activities, while grip strength will be measured using a calibrated hand dynamometer. Measurements will be obtained under standardized conditions, with appropriate participant positioning and repeated assessments used to improve measurement reliability. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data collection will involve assessment of hand dominance and measurement of grip strength for the dominant and non-dominant hands. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and association tests will be used to examine differences in grip strength and the relationship between hand dominance and grip performance. The study is expected to reveal variations in grip strength between dominant and non-dominant hands among the participants. It is also expected to identify an association between hand dominance and grip strength, with the dominant hand potentially demonstrating different grip performance from the non-dominant hand. The findings will provide information on the functional characteristics of hand dominance and grip strength among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, sports scientists, ergonomists, rehabilitation professionals, and other health-related practitioners. The study may provide reference information for evaluating normal hand function, designing rehabilitation programmes, assessing physical performance, and understanding functional differences associated with hand dominance. The study will conclude by providing information on the association between hand dominance and grip strength among undergraduate students. It will be recommended that standardized procedures for determining hand dominance and measuring grip strength be maintained in anthropometric and functional assessments. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations will also be encouraged to provide broader reference data on hand dominance and grip performance.
