Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Involved in Thermoregulation

Abstract

The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in thermoregulation, with emphasis on the structures responsible for detecting, regulating, and responding to changes in body temperature. Thermoregulation involves the coordinated functions of the skin, cutaneous blood vessels, sweat glands, skeletal muscles, and central nervous system structures, particularly the hypothalamus. Knowledge of these structures is important for understanding the anatomical basis of temperature regulation and the mechanisms that enable the human body to maintain a relatively stable internal temperature. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the location, structure, and functions of the major anatomical components involved in thermoregulation. Specific objectives will include identifying the hypothalamic regions associated with temperature regulation, assessing knowledge of the skin and its thermoregulatory structures, identifying the roles of cutaneous blood vessels and sweat glands, and determining students’ understanding of the anatomical structures involved in heat production and heat loss. The study will also assess students’ ability to relate these structures to physiological responses to changes in environmental and body temperature. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, image-based or practical identification of relevant anatomical structures. The assessment will cover the skin, hypothalamus, blood vessels, sweat glands, skeletal muscles, and other relevant structures involved in thermoregulation. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding the anatomical structures involved in thermoregulation. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of easily recognized structures such as the skin and major brain regions, while detailed knowledge of hypothalamic areas, cutaneous vascular responses, sweat glands, and the anatomical basis of heat production and heat loss may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to practical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, physiologists, medical practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in understanding and managing conditions associated with abnormal body temperature. The study may identify areas of thermoregulatory anatomy that require greater emphasis during theoretical and practical teaching and may support the use of anatomical models, diagrams, imaging resources, and functional learning activities to improve students’ understanding of temperature regulation. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in thermoregulation and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of temperature-regulatory anatomy. It is recommended that practical demonstrations, anatomical models, labelled illustrations, and functional anatomy activities be incorporated into anatomy teaching to strengthen students’ identification and understanding of the structures involved in thermoregulation. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on knowledge of the anatomical basis of thermoregulation.
