Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Changes During Puberty

Abstract

The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical changes that occur during puberty, with emphasis on the structural transformations that accompany the transition from childhood to sexual maturity. Puberty is associated with significant changes in the skeletal system, reproductive organs, body proportions, musculature, and other anatomical features. Knowledge of these changes is important for understanding normal human development and for recognizing the structural differences that occur during this important stage of growth. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the major anatomical changes associated with puberty. Specific objectives will include assessing knowledge of changes in the reproductive organs, skeletal growth, body proportions, musculature, secondary sexual characteristics, and craniofacial structures. The study will also determine students’ understanding of the differences in anatomical changes between males and females and the progression of structural development during puberty. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, age-related anatomical illustrations or image-based assessment. The assessment will cover changes in body structures, reproductive anatomy, skeletal development, body composition, and secondary sexual characteristics associated with puberty. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding anatomical changes during puberty. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of commonly recognized changes such as growth in height, development of secondary sexual characteristics, and reproductive organ maturation, while more detailed skeletal, craniofacial, muscular, and sex-specific anatomical changes may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to developmental anatomy education. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, paediatricians, adolescent health professionals, reproductive health practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in human growth and development. The study may identify areas of puberty-related anatomy that require greater emphasis during anatomy teaching and may support the use of age-related anatomical illustrations, models, and other appropriate visual learning resources to improve students’ understanding of pubertal changes. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical changes during puberty and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of pubertal development. It is recommended that developmental anatomy teaching should include clear and age-appropriate illustrations, models, and practical learning resources to strengthen students’ understanding of the anatomical changes associated with puberty. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of anatomical development during puberty.
