Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Changes During Ageing

Abstract

The study assesses students’ knowledge of the anatomical changes that occur during ageing, with emphasis on the progressive structural changes that affect different tissues, organs, and body systems throughout later life. Ageing is associated with changes in the skin, skeletal system, muscles, joints, cardiovascular structures, nervous system, and other body tissues. Knowledge of these anatomical changes is important for understanding normal ageing, distinguishing age-related structural changes from pathological conditions, and appreciating their relevance to health and clinical practice. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the major anatomical changes associated with ageing. Specific objectives will include assessing knowledge of age-related changes in the skin and connective tissues, skeletal and muscular systems, joints, cardiovascular structures, nervous system, and sensory organs. The study will also determine students’ understanding of changes in body composition, tissue elasticity, organ structure, and other anatomical features that occur progressively with advancing age. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and, where applicable, age-related anatomical illustrations or image-based assessment. The assessment will cover structural changes in selected body systems, age-related tissue alterations, and differences between normal anatomical features in younger and older individuals. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among the students regarding anatomical changes during ageing. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of commonly recognized changes such as skin thinning, loss of muscle mass, skeletal changes, and alterations in posture, while more detailed changes involving internal organs, connective tissues, nervous structures, and age-related changes in joint and vascular anatomy may present greater difficulties. Differences in knowledge may also be observed according to students’ level of study and exposure to developmental and clinical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, gerontologists, geriatricians, physiotherapists, nurses, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care and assessment of ageing populations. The study may identify areas of ageing-related anatomy that require greater emphasis during anatomy teaching and may support the use of age-related anatomical images, models, specimens, and other visual learning resources to improve students’ understanding of normal structural changes associated with ageing. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of anatomical changes during ageing and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of ageing anatomy. It is recommended that developmental and clinical anatomy teaching should incorporate age-related anatomical illustrations, comparative models, imaging resources, and practical demonstrations to strengthen students’ understanding of structural changes occurring with advancing age. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of ageing.
