Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Basis of Voice Production
Abstract
The study examines students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of voice production, with emphasis on the structures and functional relationships involved in the generation and modification of human voice. Voice production involves coordinated activities of the larynx, vocal folds, respiratory system, pharynx, oral cavity, and associated muscles and nerves. Understanding these anatomical components is important for appreciating how structural and functional interactions contribute to normal voice production and communication. The study will assess students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures involved in voice production and determine their ability to identify and explain the roles of the larynx, vocal folds, respiratory muscles, pharyngeal structures, oral cavity, and relevant nerves. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ knowledge of the anatomical structures of the larynx, identifying the muscles involved in vocal fold movement, examining knowledge of the neural supply of structures involved in voice production, and determining students’ understanding of the relationships between respiratory and vocal structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomical identification or image-based assessment focusing on structures involved in voice production. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of the anatomical basis of voice production among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of major laryngeal structures and vocal folds, while the detailed actions of intrinsic laryngeal muscles, neural supply, and coordination between respiratory and phonatory structures may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to relate specific anatomical structures to their functional contributions to the production and modification of voice. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, speech and language professionals, otolaryngologists, medical educators, and other healthcare professionals involved in teaching or assessing the anatomy of voice production. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional practical demonstrations, anatomical models, laryngeal diagrams, or image-based learning. Improved understanding of the anatomical basis of voice production may also strengthen students’ appreciation of clinically relevant conditions affecting the larynx, vocal folds, and associated neural structures. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of the anatomical basis of voice production and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of functional anatomy. It is recommended that voice-related anatomy should be taught using integrated approaches that combine anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, and functional demonstrations of the laryngeal and respiratory structures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ understanding of the anatomical basis of voice production.
