Anatomical Variation in the Position of the Lacrimal Sac Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the position of the lacrimal sac among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its location, extent, orientation, and anatomical relationships with surrounding structures. The lacrimal sac is an important component of the lacrimal drainage system and is located within the lacrimal fossa on the medial aspect of the orbit. Knowledge of its anatomical position and variations is important for understanding normal orbital anatomy and for supporting clinical and surgical procedures involving the lacrimal drainage apparatus. The study will assess the anatomical position of the lacrimal sac among undergraduate students using relevant anatomical landmarks and standardized imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying different positional patterns of the lacrimal sac, determining selected dimensions where applicable, assessing its orientation and extent within the lacrimal fossa, and documenting its anatomical relationships with adjacent orbital and nasal structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical or imaging specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the position, dimensions, orientation, and anatomical relationships of the lacrimal sac will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate comparative and inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the position, extent, orientation, and anatomical relationships of the lacrimal sac among the study population. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed in selected positional characteristics and measurements. These findings are expected to demonstrate that individual and bilateral anatomical variation may occur in the location of the lacrimal sac and that such variation may be relevant when assessing the lacrimal drainage region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, ophthalmologists, otorhinolaryngologists, radiologists, and maxillofacial and orbital surgeons involved in the assessment and management of the lacrimal drainage system. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for interpreting orbital and nasolacrimal imaging, understanding positional variations, and supporting procedures such as lacrimal drainage interventions and surgery involving the medial orbital region. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical position and variations of the lacrimal sac among the study population. It is recommended that individual and bilateral variations in lacrimal sac position be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the lacrimal drainage system, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
