Anatomical Variation in the Course of the Ulnar Artery Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the course of the ulnar artery among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its pathway, anatomical relationships, branching pattern, and position within the forearm and hand. The ulnar artery is a major artery of the upper limb that contributes substantially to the blood supply of the forearm, wrist, and hand, including the formation of the superficial palmar arch. Knowledge of variations in its course is important for understanding upper limb vascular anatomy and for supporting clinical, radiological, and surgical procedures involving the forearm and hand. The study will assess the anatomical course of the ulnar artery among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the typical course of the ulnar artery, documenting variations in its pathway and relationships with surrounding muscles and anatomical structures, determining the frequency of observed course patterns, and assessing variations in the location of selected arterial branches along its course. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the ulnar artery will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed vascular characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the course and anatomical relationships of the ulnar artery among the participants. Differences may be observed in its pathway through the forearm, its relationship with surrounding muscles and fascial structures, and its position at the wrist and hand. Variations in the origin or course of selected branches may also be identified, with some characteristics potentially showing statistically significant differences between individuals or between the right and left sides. The findings will be useful to anatomists, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, hand surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting vascular imaging, planning vascular and reconstructive procedures, performing arterial cannulation or regional interventions, and reducing the risk of inadvertent vascular injury during procedures involving the forearm, wrist, and hand. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical variations in the course of the ulnar artery among young adults. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in the pathway and anatomical relationships of the ulnar artery be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the upper limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on ulnar artery anatomy.
