Effect of Local-Language Extension Messages on Farmers’ Understanding of Technical Recommendations

Abstract

Agricultural extension messages are important for communicating technical information and recommended practices to farmers. However, the effectiveness of extension communication may depend on the language used to present agricultural recommendations. Farmers may experience difficulties understanding technical terms, instructions, and production guidelines when extension messages are delivered in unfamiliar or highly formal languages. The use of local languages may therefore improve the clarity and accessibility of technical agricultural information and support farmers’ understanding of recommended practices. This study will examine the effect of local-language extension messages on farmers’ understanding of technical recommendations. Specifically, the study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension messages delivered in local languages, determine their level of understanding of technical agricultural recommendations, examine the clarity of local-language extension messages, and assess the extent to which language used in extension communication influences farmers’ comprehension of agricultural instructions.The study will focus on local-language extension messages, farmers’ exposure to agricultural communication, understanding of technical recommendations, clarity of extension information, interpretation of agricultural instructions, recall of technical information, and comprehension of recommendations relating to crop production, input application, pest management, soil management, livestock practices, post-harvest handling, and other farm activities. It will also consider the communication channels through which local-language messages are delivered, including face-to-face extension, radio, mobile communication, community meetings, and audio advisories. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to local-language extension messages and their understanding of technical recommendations. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, as well as appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of local-language extension messages on farmers’ understanding of technical recommendations. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive extension messages in familiar local languages may demonstrate better understanding of technical agricultural recommendations than those who receive information primarily through unfamiliar languages. The findings may also show that clear translation of technical terms, appropriate use of familiar expressions, and practical explanations can improve farmers’ comprehension, recall, and interpretation of agricultural recommendations. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural broadcasters, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving extension communication strategies and developing messages that are easier for farmers to understand. The findings may also assist extension organisations in training personnel to communicate technical agricultural information effectively in local languages. The study concludes that the use of familiar local languages in agricultural extension communication can support farmers’ understanding of technical recommendations when messages are clearly presented and appropriately adapted to local contexts. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations encourage the use of suitable local languages, simplify technical terminology, train extension agents in effective local-language communication, and develop extension materials that present technical recommendations in clear and understandable forms.
