Effect of Lead Farmer Programmes on Agricultural Technology Adoption
Abstract
Agricultural technology adoption is important for improving farm productivity, efficiency, profitability, and the sustainable management of agricultural resources. Farmers require adequate information, practical knowledge, and technical support to understand and apply new agricultural technologies effectively. Lead farmer programmes provide a participatory extension approach in which selected farmers receive training and technical information and subsequently share agricultural knowledge and practices with other farmers in their communities. Such programmes can support the dissemination of agricultural technologies through farmer-to-farmer learning and practical demonstration. This study will examine the effect of lead farmer programmes on agricultural technology adoption. The study will assess the extent to which participation in or exposure to lead farmer programmes influences farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and adoption of improved agricultural technologies. It will also examine the relationship between lead farmer activities and farmers’ use of recommended agricultural technologies. The study will focus on lead farmer training, farmer-to-farmer information sharing, demonstration activities, community meetings, practical instruction, follow-up support, and technical guidance. Agricultural technologies to be considered will include improved seed varieties, appropriate fertilizer application, improved crop production techniques, irrigation methods, pest and disease management technologies, farm machinery, soil conservation practices, post-harvest technologies, and other relevant production innovations. The study will assess farmers’ level of exposure to lead farmer activities and their use of these technologies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on exposure to lead farmer programmes, agricultural technology awareness, knowledge, and adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between lead farmer programmes and agricultural technology adoption. The study is expected to reveal that lead farmer programmes have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of agricultural technologies. Farmers who receive information and practical guidance from trained lead farmers may demonstrate greater awareness and understanding of improved technologies and may be more likely to apply them in their farming activities. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate training of lead farmers, limited technical resources, insufficient follow-up, and difficulties in accessing recommended technologies and inputs. The study will be useful to farmers, lead farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist stakeholders in improving farmer-to-farmer extension approaches and strengthening the training and support provided to lead farmers. It may also provide useful information for developing effective strategies for disseminating agricultural technologies within farming communities. The study concludes that lead farmer programmes can provide an important channel for disseminating agricultural technologies and supporting farmers’ adoption of improved practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen lead farmer selection, training, supervision, demonstration activities, and follow-up support. Lead farmers should be provided with relevant technical information and practical resources to improve their capacity to share agricultural technologies effectively and support wider technology adoption among farmers.
