Effect of Extension Training on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Silage Quality Assessment
Abstract
Silage is an important source of conserved livestock feed that enables farmers to preserve forage and crop residues for use during periods of feed scarcity. The quality of silage can influence its nutritional value, palatability, safety, and suitability for livestock feeding. Proper assessment of silage quality requires knowledge of characteristics such as colour, smell, texture, moisture condition, fermentation quality, mould presence, and signs of spoilage. Extension training can provide livestock farmers with the practical knowledge and skills required to assess silage quality and make appropriate feeding and storage decisions. This study will examine the effect of extension training on livestock farmers’ adoption of silage quality assessment practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended silage quality assessment procedures, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate assessment practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical information provided to livestock farmers on silage quality management. The study will focus on extension training, silage quality assessment, livestock farmers’ knowledge, training participation, silage colour, odour, texture, moisture condition, fermentation quality, mould detection, spoilage identification, storage inspection, feed safety, and adoption of recommended quality assessment practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers involved in silage production or utilization to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in assessing silage quality. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of silage quality assessment practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended silage quality assessment practices. Farmers who receive practical training and regular technical guidance may demonstrate greater ability to identify acceptable silage characteristics, detect mould and spoilage, assess moisture condition, and recognize signs of poor fermentation. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and follow-up training contribute to more consistent assessment of silage quality before feeding. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, animal nutrition specialists, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on feed conservation and livestock nutrition. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to assess silage quality and reduce the risks associated with feeding poorly preserved forage. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of silage quality assessment practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical demonstrations, farmer training, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on silage quality assessment. Extension programmes should emphasize the identification of proper fermentation, moisture condition, mould, spoilage, odour, colour, and texture to support safe and effective use of silage in livestock production.
