Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Participation in Technology Testing
Abstract
Technology testing is an important component of agricultural research and extension because it enables farmers and agricultural stakeholders to assess the suitability, effectiveness, affordability, and practicality of new agricultural technologies under real farming conditions. Farmers’ participation in technology testing can provide valuable feedback on the performance and acceptability of innovations before wider promotion. Extension training can equip farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand, test, assess, and provide feedback on agricultural technologies. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ participation in technology testing. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which they participate in testing agricultural technologies. The study will also examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ participation in technology testing activities. The study will focus on farmers’ participation in activities such as identifying technologies for testing, establishing demonstration plots, testing improved production techniques, comparing traditional and improved technologies, monitoring technology performance, recording observations, assessing costs and benefits, providing feedback, and communicating technology-related experiences to extension agents and researchers. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to practical demonstrations, field training, farmer field days, extension meetings, on-farm trials, and research-related activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension training and participation in technology testing activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, participation indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of participation and the relationship between extension training and farmers’ participation in technology testing. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate greater participation in agricultural technology testing activities. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of testing procedures, observation, record keeping, performance assessment, and feedback provision. However, inadequate training opportunities, limited access to research activities, lack of testing materials, logistical challenges, limited extension contact, and insufficient collaboration between farmers and research institutions may constrain participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, farmer organisations, policymakers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in promoting farmers’ involvement in agricultural technology testing. The findings may also assist extension and research organisations in designing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ capacity to participate meaningfully in technology evaluation and development. The study concludes that extension training can enhance farmers’ participation in technology testing by providing the knowledge and practical skills required for effective involvement. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies provide regular practical training on technology testing, observation, record keeping, performance assessment, and feedback. Stronger collaboration among farmers, extension agents, researchers, and agricultural technology developers should also be encouraged to create more opportunities for farmer participation in technology testing.
