Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Vermicomposting Practices

Abstract

Vermicomposting is a biological process that uses earthworms to decompose organic materials into nutrient-rich organic manure that can be used to improve soil fertility and support crop production. The practice provides farmers with a method of converting crop residues, animal manure, and other biodegradable materials into useful soil amendments while contributing to sustainable farm waste management. Effective vermicomposting requires appropriate knowledge of organic material selection, preparation, moisture management, temperature control, earthworm handling, aeration, decomposition, harvesting, and storage. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills required to understand and apply appropriate vermicomposting practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of vermicomposting practices. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of vermicomposting and determine the extent to which exposure to extension training contributes to their understanding of recommended vermicomposting practices. It will also examine farmers’ participation in training programmes, frequency of training, sources of vermicomposting information, and access to agricultural extension services. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of selecting suitable organic materials, preparing vermicomposting sites, pre-composting materials, selecting appropriate earthworms, preparing bedding materials, maintaining suitable moisture levels, regulating temperature, ensuring aeration, feeding earthworms, preventing pests and harmful substances, monitoring decomposition, harvesting vermicompost, and properly storing and applying the finished product. Attention will also be given to practical extension training methods such as demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer meetings, and hands-on training activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of vermicomposting practices and exposure to extension training. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of vermicomposting practices. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of vermicomposting practices based on their level of exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate in practical demonstrations, hands-on training, farm visits, and other extension activities may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate vermicomposting techniques. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to earthworm selection, organic material preparation, moisture and temperature management, aeration, harvesting, and application. Constraints such as inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, lack of technical information, availability of suitable materials, and limited access to appropriate vermicomposting equipment may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing practical extension training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of vermicomposting and promote sustainable organic waste management. Improved knowledge may contribute to better utilisation of farm residues, enhanced soil fertility management, reduced organic waste, improved crop productivity, and increased adoption of environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge of vermicomposting practices by providing practical information, technical guidance, and hands-on skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen vermicomposting education through practical demonstrations, field training, farm visits, farmer field schools, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with appropriate technical information, suitable earthworms, composting materials, and basic equipment to facilitate effective vermicomposting practices.
