Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Soil Health Monitoring Practices

Abstract

Soil health monitoring practices are important for assessing the condition and productive capacity of agricultural soils. Regular monitoring can help farmers identify changes in soil fertility, organic matter, moisture, structure, and other indicators that influence crop growth and productivity. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance needed to understand and apply appropriate soil health monitoring practices. The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of soil health monitoring practices. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension training on soil health monitoring, determine the extent of training received, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended soil health monitoring practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension training and the adoption of soil health monitoring practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of soil health monitoring practices. The study is expected to find that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of soil health monitoring practices. Farmers who receive practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and regular training are expected to demonstrate greater use of practices such as observing soil conditions, assessing soil moisture, monitoring nutrient status, identifying changes in soil structure, and keeping records of soil conditions. However, inadequate training, limited access to soil testing facilities, cost of assessment tools, insufficient extension contact, and limited technical knowledge may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, soil management specialists, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, and farmers’ organizations. Improved extension training may strengthen farmers’ capacity to monitor soil health, identify soil-related problems at an early stage, and make informed decisions concerning soil fertility management and sustainable crop production. The study will conclude that effective extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate soil health monitoring practices. It will recommend regular practical training, field demonstrations, increased extension visits, improved access to soil assessment tools and facilities, and continuous technical support to strengthen farmers’ capacity to monitor and manage soil health effectively.
