Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Pollinator-Friendly Farming Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of pollinator-friendly farming practices. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects play an important role in the reproduction of many crops and the maintenance of agricultural biodiversity. Adoption of farming practices that protect and support pollinators can contribute to improved ecological balance, crop productivity, and sustainable agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of pollinator-friendly farming practices, including preservation of flowering plants, establishment of flowering field margins, maintenance of suitable habitats, reduction of unnecessary disturbance of pollinator habitats, provision of flowering resources, and responsible use of agricultural chemicals. It will also examine the role of extension training in providing farmers with practical knowledge on identifying pollinators, protecting their habitats, and incorporating pollinator-friendly practices into routine farm management. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of pollinator-friendly farming practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension training and the extent to which they adopt recommended pollinator-friendly farming practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to habitat protection, maintenance of flowering vegetation, provision of food resources, and responsible management of agricultural chemicals. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension training to pollinator-friendly farming. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that promote pollinator conservation within agricultural landscapes. The study will conclude that extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt farming practices that support pollinators. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on pollinator habitat protection, flowering vegetation management, and responsible agricultural chemical use to encourage farmers’ adoption of pollinator-friendly farming practices.
