Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Nursery Seedling Spacing Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of nursery seedling spacing practices. Proper seedling spacing is an important nursery management practice because it provides seedlings with adequate access to light, water, nutrients, and air circulation, while reducing excessive competition and overcrowding. Appropriate spacing can support healthy seedling development, improve growth uniformity, and produce stronger planting materials for field establishment. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills on suitable spacing requirements for different crops and nursery conditions. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on nursery seedling spacing and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended spacing practices. It will also identify the major spacing methods used by farmers and determine the types of training received on seed placement, row arrangement, spacing measurements, thinning, and seedling management. The study will consider practices such as maintaining appropriate distances between seedlings, arranging seedlings in suitable rows, avoiding overcrowding, thinning excess seedlings, and providing adequate space for healthy seedling development. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers involved in nursery production in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of nursery seedling spacing practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ participation in extension training on nursery seedling spacing and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the spacing practices commonly used by farmers and the major challenges encountered in maintaining appropriate seedling distances. The findings may further indicate areas where additional practical training and demonstrations are required to improve farmers’ understanding and application of suitable nursery spacing practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop development agencies, nursery operators, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension training in promoting appropriate nursery seedling spacing. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and demonstrations on spacing requirements, row arrangement, thinning, and seedling management. Improved spacing practices may contribute to healthier seedlings, better nursery growth, and improved quality of planting materials. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of extension training to farmers’ adoption of appropriate nursery seedling spacing practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular practical training, field demonstrations, extension visits, and improved access to technical information on nursery spacing requirements. These measures may enhance farmers’ ability to manage nursery seedlings effectively and support successful crop establishment and sustainable agricultural production.
