Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Integrated Nutrient Management

Abstract

Integrated nutrient management is an important approach to improving soil fertility and crop productivity through the balanced use of organic and inorganic sources of plant nutrients. The practice may involve the combined use of mineral fertilizers, organic manure, compost, crop residues, biofertilizers, and other nutrient management techniques. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and adopt appropriate integrated nutrient management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of integrated nutrient management. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how training influences their adoption of recommended nutrient management practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply the knowledge and skills acquired through extension training in managing soil fertility and crop nutrient requirements. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as appropriate use of mineral fertilizers, application of organic manure and compost, incorporation of crop residues, use of biofertilizers, nutrient recycling, soil testing, appropriate fertilizer rates, timing of nutrient application, and the combined use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources. Attention will also be given to extension training methods including practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer group meetings, workshops, and technical advisory sessions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of integrated nutrient management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension training may demonstrate higher adoption of integrated nutrient management practices. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of soil fertility, fertilizer application, organic nutrient sources, nutrient recycling, and appropriate combinations of nutrient inputs. However, limited access to extension agents, inadequate availability of organic materials, high costs of mineral fertilizers, insufficient practical demonstrations, and limited access to soil fertility information may constrain effective adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil fertility specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improved nutrient management and identify challenges affecting farmers’ adoption of integrated nutrient management practices. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing farmer-oriented training programmes that promote sustainable soil fertility management. The study concludes that extension training can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of integrated nutrient management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, organize field demonstrations, provide guidance on appropriate combinations of organic and inorganic nutrient sources, and improve farmers’ access to soil fertility information. These measures can promote efficient nutrient use, improve soil health, enhance crop productivity, and support sustainable agricultural production.
