Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Orchard Pruning Practices

Abstract

Orchard crops contribute to food production, household income, employment, and agricultural diversification. Proper pruning is an important orchard management practice because it helps farmers maintain suitable tree structure, improve light penetration and air circulation, remove unproductive or diseased branches, and support fruit production. However, inadequate knowledge and poor application of recommended pruning techniques may affect orchard productivity and tree health. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required to adopt improved orchard pruning practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved orchard pruning practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which they adopt recommended pruning practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved orchard pruning techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge and application of pruning methods, selection of appropriate pruning tools, timing and frequency of pruning, removal of dead and diseased branches, thinning of overcrowded branches, removal of water shoots and suckers, maintenance of suitable tree shape, branch spacing, wound management, and proper disposal of pruned materials. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations, training sessions, advisory visits, and access to extension information on orchard management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from orchard farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved pruning practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved orchard pruning practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of improved orchard pruning practices. Training through field demonstrations and practical guidance may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate pruning methods, timing, tool use, and tree management. The study may also identify constraints such as inadequate training opportunities, limited access to extension agents, lack of suitable pruning tools, and insufficient technical information. The study will be useful to orchard farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, horticultural organisations, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in fruit production. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in improving farmers’ adoption of recommended orchard management practices. The findings may also assist extension organisations in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific pruning needs. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of promoting farmers’ adoption of improved orchard pruning practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical pruning demonstrations, farmer training, advisory visits, and dissemination of appropriate orchard management information. Farmers should also be supported with access to suitable pruning tools and technical guidance to encourage proper adoption of improved pruning practices and enhance orchard productivity.
