Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Oil Palm Management Practices
Abstract
Oil palm is an important tree crop that contributes to food production, household income, employment, and agricultural development. Effective management of oil palm plantations is essential for maintaining healthy palms, improving fruit production, and sustaining farm productivity over time. However, poor management practices, inadequate technical knowledge, and limited access to improved production information may reduce the productivity of oil palm farms. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required to adopt recommended oil palm management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved oil palm management practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which they adopt recommended oil palm management practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved oil palm management practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved planting materials, appropriate spacing, field establishment, nutrient management, weed control, pruning, removal of old and unproductive fronds, pest and disease management, moisture conservation, harvesting of ripe fruit bunches, and proper field sanitation. It will also consider farmers’ participation in training programmes, farm demonstrations, extension visits, practical field activities, and access to technical information on improved oil palm management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from oil palm farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved oil palm management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of improved oil palm management practices. Training, field demonstrations, and advisory support may improve farmers’ application of recommended methods of nutrient management, weed control, pruning, pest and disease management, and harvesting. The study may also identify constraints such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to improved inputs, insufficient training opportunities, and financial limitations. The study will be useful to oil palm farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, oil palm producer organisations, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in oil palm production. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in improving farmers’ adoption of recommended oil palm management practices. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training programmes that respond to farmers’ management needs. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of promoting farmers’ adoption of improved oil palm management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information on oil palm management. Farmers should also be supported with access to improved inputs and appropriate technologies to encourage proper adoption of recommended management practices, improve palm health, and enhance oil palm productivity.
