Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Hay-Making Techniques

Abstract

Hay making is an important feed conservation practice that enables farmers to preserve forage for livestock during periods of inadequate pasture availability. Proper hay production can help maintain the availability and quality of livestock feed, reduce seasonal feed shortages, minimise wastage of forage, and support livestock productivity. However, many farmers may have limited knowledge of appropriate hay-making techniques, which can affect the quality and storage life of conserved forage. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to adopt improved hay-making practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of hay-making techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which such training influences their adoption of recommended hay-making practices. The study will also examine the sources of information available to farmers and identify the challenges affecting their adoption of hay-making techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as selection of suitable forage, appropriate cutting time, harvesting at the recommended stage of plant maturity, drying, turning, moisture management, baling, stacking, storage, protection from rain and pests, and regular inspection of stored hay. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension training, practical demonstrations, frequency of extension contact, access to technical information, and availability of hay-making equipment and materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension training and adoption of hay-making techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended hay-making practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of improved hay-making techniques. Training and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate forage selection, harvesting, drying, moisture control, baling, stacking, and storage practices. However, inadequate equipment, limited access to extension services, labour requirements, financial constraints, poor storage facilities, and insufficient technical information may continue to affect farmers’ adoption of hay-making techniques. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, livestock development programmes, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension training programmes on forage conservation and improving farmers’ capacity to produce and store quality hay. The findings may also support efforts to reduce livestock feed shortages, minimise forage wastage, improve livestock productivity, and strengthen farmers’ income and livelihood opportunities. The study concludes that extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate hay-making techniques and improving livestock feed conservation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular and practical training, demonstrations, and advisory services on improved hay production and storage. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate harvesting, drying, baling, and storage techniques and improve their access to suitable hay-making equipment and facilities.
