Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Grass Strips for Erosion Control

Abstract

Grass strips are an important soil conservation practice involving the establishment of bands of suitable grasses across farmland to reduce surface runoff, control soil erosion, trap sediment, and protect fertile topsoil. Properly established grass strips can slow the movement of water across sloping farmland, improve water infiltration, conserve soil moisture, and contribute to sustainable agricultural production. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to establish, manage, and maintain grass strips effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of grass strips for erosion control. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their level of adoption of grass-strip practices, and examine the influence of training on farmers’ decisions to establish and maintain grass strips. It will also identify challenges that may affect farmers’ adoption of grass strips for controlling erosion on agricultural land. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable grass species, site selection, strip width, spacing, planting methods, establishment periods, maintenance, replacement of damaged grasses, and integration of grass strips with other soil conservation measures. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices such as planting grass strips across slopes, maintaining continuous vegetation cover, controlling runoff pathways, and preventing excessive grazing or removal of established grasses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension training, knowledge, exposure, and adoption of grass-strip practices. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of grass strips for erosion control. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of grass strips for erosion control. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of suitable grass species, appropriate planting methods, strip arrangement, maintenance requirements, and the benefits of vegetation-based erosion control. However, inadequate planting materials, labour requirements, competition for farmland, limited extension contact, grazing pressure, and lack of technical support may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation agencies, environmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting practical soil conservation measures and improving farmers’ capacity to manage erosion and maintain productive farmland. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of grass strips as a practical method of erosion control. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen hands-on training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and farmer group activities on grass-strip establishment and management. Farmers should also be provided with guidance on appropriate grass selection, strip spacing, maintenance, and integration with other conservation practices to promote sustainable erosion control.
