Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Goat Kidding Management

Abstract

Goat kidding management is an important aspect of goat production because proper care of does and newborn kids can improve survival, growth, reproductive performance, and overall herd productivity. Appropriate kidding management practices include preparing suitable kidding areas, monitoring does during kidding, providing proper assistance when necessary, ensuring adequate colostrum intake, maintaining hygiene, caring for the umbilical cord, and monitoring the health of newborn kids. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to apply recommended kidding management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of goat kidding management practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how such training influences their adoption of recommended goat kidding management practices. It will examine farmers’ participation in training programmes, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory activities relating to kidding management. The study will also assess farmers’ adoption of practices such as preparing kidding facilities, monitoring pregnant does, assisting during difficult kidding, ensuring early colostrum consumption, maintaining hygiene, caring for the umbilical cord, and monitoring newborn kids. The study will focus on extension training, farmers, goat kidding management, kidding preparation, doe management, kidding assistance, colostrum feeding, newborn kid care, umbilical cord care, hygiene practices, kid health, reproductive management, and goat production. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended kidding management procedures. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to veterinary support, lack of suitable kidding facilities, insufficient technical knowledge, and financial constraints that may affect the adoption of recommended practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from goat farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension training exposure and adoption of goat kidding management practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended kidding management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of goat kidding management practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate better knowledge and greater application of appropriate kidding preparation, doe monitoring, colostrum feeding, hygiene, umbilical cord care, and newborn kid management practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension services, limited access to veterinary assistance, poor housing facilities, and insufficient technical knowledge could constrain the consistent adoption of recommended kidding management practices. The study will be useful to goat farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, veterinary professionals, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in livestock production. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension training programmes on goat reproductive and newborn management. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ kidding management challenges and promote improved kid survival and herd productivity. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate goat kidding management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and livestock development organisations should provide regular practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on kidding preparation, doe monitoring, kidding assistance, colostrum feeding, hygiene, umbilical cord care, and newborn kid management. Extension programmes should also strengthen farmers’ access to appropriate veterinary support to promote healthy kidding outcomes and sustainable goat production.
