Abstract
The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farm pond management practices. Farm ponds are important water storage structures that can support agricultural activities by providing water for irrigation, livestock, and other farm needs. Proper management of farm ponds is essential for maintaining water quality, storage capacity, structural condition, and reliable availability of water for agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of farm pond management practices, including regular inspection of pond structures, removal of sediments and debris, maintenance of pond embankments, control of erosion around pond areas, management of vegetation, prevention of water contamination, and monitoring of water levels. It will also examine the role of extension training in providing farmers with practical knowledge and skills for maintaining and managing farm ponds effectively. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of farm pond management practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension training and the extent to which they adopt recommended farm pond management practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to pond maintenance, sediment management, embankment protection, water quality management, and prevention of erosion. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, water management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension training to improved farm pond management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that strengthen farmers’ skills in maintaining and managing farm water storage structures. The study will conclude that extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed for effective farm pond management. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on pond inspection, cleaning, sediment control, embankment maintenance, water quality protection, and erosion management to encourage farmers’ adoption of appropriate farm pond management practices.
