Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Expired Produce Identification Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of expired produce identification practices. Proper identification of expired or deteriorated agricultural produce is important for maintaining produce quality, protecting consumers, reducing contamination risks, and preventing unsuitable products from being marketed or consumed. Effective identification practices can also help farmers improve stock management and reduce losses associated with poor monitoring of stored produce. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt expired produce identification practices following extension training. Specific areas will include checking storage dates, monitoring produce condition, identifying signs of deterioration, inspecting packaging and labels where applicable, separating unsuitable produce from good-quality stock, marking affected products, maintaining inspection records, and carrying out regular checks of stored agricultural products. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for identifying and managing produce that has exceeded its acceptable storage period or condition. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of expired produce identification, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ adoption of expired produce identification practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to monitor storage periods, inspect produce condition, recognize deterioration, separate unsuitable produce, mark affected stock, and maintain relevant inspection records. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of expired produce identification practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage operators, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension training in improving produce quality and storage management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ skills in monitoring stored produce and preventing unsuitable products from entering the market. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of expired produce identification practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, regular storage inspections, training sessions, and follow-up advisory services on monitoring storage periods, recognizing deterioration, separating unsuitable produce, maintaining records, and managing identified expired or deteriorated produce.
