Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Drip Irrigation Maintenance

Abstract

Drip irrigation maintenance is an important practice for ensuring the effective and continuous operation of drip irrigation systems in agricultural production. Proper maintenance can help prevent clogging, leakage, emitter damage, and uneven water distribution, thereby improving water-use efficiency and supporting healthy crop development. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills required to maintain drip irrigation systems and identify common maintenance problems. The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of drip irrigation maintenance. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension training on drip irrigation maintenance, determine the extent of training received, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended maintenance practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of drip irrigation maintenance. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension training and the adoption of drip irrigation maintenance practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of drip irrigation maintenance. The study is expected to find that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of drip irrigation maintenance practices. Farmers who receive practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and regular training are expected to demonstrate greater application of practices such as cleaning filters, checking emitters, repairing leaks, flushing irrigation lines, and monitoring water flow. However, inadequate training, limited access to maintenance tools, cost of replacement components, technical difficulties, and insufficient extension contact may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, irrigation development agencies, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, and farmers’ associations. Improved extension training may strengthen farmers’ technical capacity to maintain drip irrigation systems, improve water distribution, reduce system failures, and support efficient use of irrigation water in agricultural production. The study will conclude that effective extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate drip irrigation maintenance practices. It will recommend regular practical training, field demonstrations, increased extension visits, improved access to maintenance tools and replacement components, and continuous technical support to enhance farmers’ ability to maintain drip irrigation systems effectively.
