Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Direct-to-Consumer Agricultural Marketing
Abstract
Direct-to-consumer agricultural marketing is an approach through which farmers sell agricultural products directly to final consumers without relying extensively on intermediaries. This marketing approach may involve farm-gate sales, farmers’ markets, roadside sales, community-supported agriculture, direct delivery, social media marketing, and other channels that allow farmers to establish direct relationships with consumers. It can provide opportunities for farmers to understand consumer preferences, improve product promotion, and strengthen control over marketing activities. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt and manage direct-to-consumer marketing activities effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of direct-to-consumer agricultural marketing. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how such training influences their knowledge and adoption of direct marketing practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers participate in direct sales and identify the marketing channels commonly used to connect farmers with final consumers. The study will focus on farmers’ use of farm-gate sales, farmers’ markets, roadside sales, direct delivery, community-based sales, social media marketing, mobile communication, and other direct marketing channels. It will examine farmers’ practices in product promotion, consumer communication, price setting, order management, packaging, customer service, payment collection, and product delivery. The study will also consider farmers’ marketing knowledge, digital literacy, access to market information, availability of extension training, production volume, transportation facilities, and access to consumers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of direct-to-consumer marketing practices, frequency of participation, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of direct-to-consumer agricultural marketing. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of direct-to-consumer marketing practices. Extension training may improve farmers’ ability to identify consumers, promote farm products, determine appropriate prices, communicate with customers, manage orders, package products, and organise direct delivery. However, challenges such as limited market information, inadequate transportation, insufficient marketing skills, irregular production, limited access to consumers, and difficulties in managing direct sales may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural marketing organisations, farmer cooperatives, consumer groups, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide information on the role of extension training in strengthening farmers’ direct marketing capabilities and improving their participation in alternative agricultural marketing channels. Extension organisations may use the findings to develop practical marketing training programmes, while agricultural agencies and farmer organisations may use the information to support improved market linkages between farmers and consumers. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of direct-to-consumer agricultural marketing by improving their knowledge, marketing skills, and ability to manage direct relationships with consumers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate direct marketing education into their advisory activities through practical demonstrations, market-oriented training, and continuous technical guidance. Relevant stakeholders should also support farmers with market information, transportation facilities, packaging knowledge, digital marketing skills, and consumer linkage opportunities to promote effective adoption of direct-to-consumer agricultural marketing.
