Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Storage Loss Recording Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural storage loss recording practices. Recording storage losses is an important aspect of post-harvest management because it enables farmers to identify the quantity and nature of produce lost during storage, monitor changes in stored products, and improve future storage decisions. Proper loss recording can also provide useful information for identifying recurring storage problems and reducing avoidable losses. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt agricultural storage loss recording practices following extension training. Specific areas will include recording the quantity of produce stored, documenting damaged or spoiled produce, recording pest-related losses, noting changes in produce quantity, identifying the causes of storage losses, recording the date and period of losses, calculating quantities lost, and maintaining records for future reference. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills for systematically documenting storage losses. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of storage loss recording, and adoption of relevant recording practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ adoption of agricultural storage loss recording practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to document quantities stored, record damaged and spoiled produce, identify causes of losses, calculate quantities lost, and maintain systematic storage records. The study may also identify challenges that affect farmers’ consistent recording of storage losses. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension training in improving storage loss management. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ record-keeping skills and enable them to use storage loss information to improve post-harvest management. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of agricultural storage loss recording practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, record-keeping exercises, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on documenting storage losses, identifying their causes, calculating quantities lost, and using recorded information to improve storage practices.
