Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Equipment Pre-Operation Inspection

Abstract

Agricultural equipment plays an important role in improving farm efficiency, reducing labour requirements, and supporting timely completion of farm operations. However, improper use of farm machinery and equipment can result in mechanical failures, operational delays, accidents, and unnecessary maintenance costs. Pre-operation inspection is an important safety and maintenance practice that enables farmers to identify equipment faults, check essential components, and confirm that machinery is in suitable condition before use. Extension training can provide farmers with the practical knowledge required to adopt appropriate equipment inspection practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural equipment pre-operation inspection practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended pre-operation inspection procedures, and examine the extent to which extension training influences their adoption of equipment inspection practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical guidance provided to farmers on safe and proper equipment operation. The study will focus on extension training, agricultural equipment inspection, farmers’ knowledge, equipment safety, pre-operation checks, engine inspection, fluid-level checks, tyre and wheel inspection, belts and moving parts, electrical components, safety guards, lubrication, equipment cleanliness, fault identification, and adoption of recommended inspection procedures. Information will be obtained from farmers who use agricultural machinery and equipment to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied before equipment operation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of agricultural equipment pre-operation inspection practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended pre-operation inspection practices. Farmers who receive practical training and demonstrations may demonstrate greater attention to engine condition, fluid levels, tyres, belts, electrical components, safety guards, lubrication, and identification of equipment faults before operation. The study may also indicate that regular training and follow-up technical support contribute to more consistent application of equipment inspection procedures. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, machinery operators, agricultural development agencies, equipment service providers, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on agricultural machinery management and farm safety. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to identify equipment problems before they develop into serious mechanical or operational challenges. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of agricultural equipment pre-operation inspection practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical demonstrations, equipment safety training, farm machinery advisory services, and follow-up visits. Extension programmes should emphasize systematic pre-operation checks, early fault identification, proper maintenance, and safe equipment operation to promote efficient and safer agricultural production.
