Effect of Extension Services on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Visitor Control Measures

Abstract

Visitor control is an important component of livestock farm biosecurity because uncontrolled movement of people into livestock facilities may increase the risk of introducing and spreading infectious agents. Proper management of farm visitors can help protect animals, reduce avoidable disease risks, and support good livestock production practices. However, some livestock farmers may have limited knowledge of appropriate visitor control measures and may not consistently apply recommended procedures. Extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, practical guidance, and technical support for improving visitor management on livestock farms. This study will examine the effect of extension services on livestock farmers’ adoption of visitor control measures. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended visitor control practices, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate measures. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of biosecurity information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on extension services, visitor control measures, livestock farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, visitor registration, restricted farm access, visitor screening, protective clothing, sanitation procedures, designated entry points, movement records, farm access control, biosecurity awareness, and adoption of recommended visitor management practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in managing visitors on their farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of visitor control measures. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended visitor control measures. Farmers who receive regular extension advice, practical demonstrations, and biosecurity training may demonstrate greater use of visitor registration, restricted access, visitor screening, protective clothing, sanitation procedures, and movement records. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to improved implementation of visitor control measures on livestock farms. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary and livestock development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, animal health organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving livestock farm biosecurity and reducing avoidable disease risks. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in controlling access to livestock production facilities. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of visitor control measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical biosecurity demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services. Extension programmes should emphasize visitor registration, access restriction, screening procedures, protective clothing, sanitation, and proper movement documentation to support effective visitor control and improved livestock farm biosecurity.
