Effect of Extension Services on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Rotational Grazing Practices

Abstract

Rotational grazing is an important livestock management practice that involves the planned movement of animals between grazing areas to allow pasture resources to recover and improve their utilization. Proper rotational grazing can support pasture productivity, reduce overgrazing, improve livestock feeding, and contribute to sustainable management of grazing resources. However, livestock farmers may face challenges in adopting rotational grazing practices due to inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to advisory information, and difficulties in pasture planning. Extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance required to improve grazing management. This study will examine the effect of extension services on livestock farmers’ adoption of rotational grazing practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of rotational grazing techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of recommended grazing management practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on extension services, rotational grazing, livestock farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, pasture allocation, grazing schedules, paddock management, stocking management, pasture recovery, livestock movement, grazing duration, water access, pasture utilization, and adoption of recommended grazing practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their grazing management activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of rotational grazing practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of rotational grazing practices. Farmers who have regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate grazing schedules, pasture allocation, paddock management, controlled livestock movement, and pasture recovery practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to improved grazing management. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, pastoral organizations, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting sustainable livestock production and improved pasture management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ challenges in implementing rotational grazing systems. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of rotational grazing practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services for livestock farmers. Extension programmes should emphasize pasture planning, grazing schedules, paddock management, stocking control, livestock movement, and pasture recovery to promote sustainable grazing management and improved livestock production.
