Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Vegetative Farm Boundary Management

Abstract

Vegetative farm boundary management involves the establishment and maintenance of grasses, shrubs, trees, and other suitable vegetation along farm boundaries to define farmland, protect soil, reduce erosion, conserve biodiversity, and improve the overall management of agricultural landscapes. Properly managed vegetative boundaries can provide additional environmental benefits while helping farmers maintain productive and sustainable farmland. Extension services provide farmers with technical information, practical guidance, and demonstrations that may influence their knowledge and adoption of appropriate vegetative boundary management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of vegetative farm boundary management. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ access to extension services influences their knowledge and application of vegetative boundary management practices. The study will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension contact, training, demonstrations, and advisory services and determine their level of adoption of recommended vegetative farm boundary practices. The study will focus on extension services, extension contact, farmer training, vegetative farm boundaries, boundary vegetation, tree planting, grass strips, erosion control, soil conservation, biodiversity management, farmland protection, and sustainable land management. Attention will be given to farmers’ knowledge of suitable vegetation, boundary establishment, maintenance practices, vegetation spacing, pruning, and management of boundary plants to ensure that they contribute positively to farm productivity and environmental conservation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to extension services, knowledge of vegetative farm boundary management, and adoption of recommended practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of vegetative farm boundary management. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to extension services may demonstrate higher knowledge and adoption of vegetative farm boundary management practices. Extension visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, and advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of the environmental and agricultural benefits of maintaining vegetation along farm boundaries. However, adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to planting materials, labour availability, farm size, land-use preferences, and perceived benefits of boundary vegetation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes that promote sustainable farm boundary management and soil conservation. The findings may also assist extension agencies in designing practical demonstrations and advisory programmes that encourage farmers to establish and maintain suitable vegetative boundaries on their farms. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of vegetative farm boundary management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on appropriate boundary vegetation establishment and maintenance. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable vegetative boundary practices that support soil conservation, erosion control, biodiversity protection, and sustainable agricultural land management.
