Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Selective Harvesting Practices

Abstract

Selective harvesting practices involve harvesting agricultural produce at appropriate stages of maturity and selecting suitable produce while leaving immature or unsuitable portions to develop further. Proper selective harvesting can help maintain produce quality, reduce physical damage, minimize postharvest losses, and improve the market value of harvested crops. Extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, practical guidance, and technical support needed to understand and apply appropriate selective harvesting practices. The study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of selective harvesting practices. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on selective harvesting, determine the extent of extension support received by farmers, examine their level of adoption of selective harvesting practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of these practices. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension services and the adoption of selective harvesting practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of selective harvesting practices. The study is expected to find that extension services have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of selective harvesting practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, demonstrations, technical advice, and follow-up visits are expected to demonstrate greater understanding and application of appropriate harvesting practices. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited technical knowledge, labour constraints, traditional harvesting methods, and insufficient access to relevant information may limit adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ associations, and other stakeholders involved in crop production and postharvest management. Strengthened extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in selective harvesting, contributing to better produce quality, reduced harvesting losses, and improved marketability of agricultural products. The study will conclude that effective extension services are important for promoting farmers’ adoption of selective harvesting practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical field demonstrations, timely technical information, farmer training, and continuous advisory support to encourage the effective adoption of selective harvesting practices and improve postharvest outcomes.
