Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Seed Inventory Management

Abstract

Seed inventory management involves the systematic recording, monitoring, storage, and control of seed stocks available for planting and future use. Effective management of seed inventories can help farmers maintain adequate quantities of quality planting materials, reduce seed losses, prevent unnecessary shortages, and improve planning for subsequent planting seasons. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and technical guidance on appropriate seed inventory practices, including stock recording, storage monitoring, seed identification, and inventory planning. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of seed inventory management. It will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to seed inventory management, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended inventory practices, and examine how extension education and advisory support influence farmers’ management of seed stocks. The study will focus on extension contact, extension education, advisory services, seed stock recording, seed identification, quantity monitoring, seed storage management, stock rotation, seed quality monitoring, inventory documentation, seed loss prevention, and seasonal seed planning. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices for monitoring available seed quantities, recording seed inflows and outflows, identifying old and new seed stocks, and maintaining suitable storage conditions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their access to extension services and adoption of seed inventory management practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of seed inventory management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of seed inventory management practices. Farmers with greater access to relevant extension information and technical guidance may demonstrate higher adoption of practices such as seed stock recording, quantity monitoring, storage monitoring, stock rotation, inventory documentation, and seed loss prevention. The study may also identify specific inventory management practices where farmers require additional extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, community seed organisations, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote effective seed inventory management among farmers. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing seed losses, improving availability of planting materials, planning seed requirements, and maintaining better control over their seed stocks. The study concludes that extension services can provide important knowledge and technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of seed inventory management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on seed stock recording, quantity monitoring, storage, stock rotation, inventory documentation, quality monitoring, and seasonal seed planning to strengthen farmers’ capacity to manage seed inventories effectively.
