Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Resource-Efficient Farm Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of resource-efficient farm practices, with emphasis on how agricultural extension support influences farmers’ decisions to adopt practices that promote efficient use of land, water, labour, inputs, and other farm resources. Resource-efficient farming practices are important for improving farm productivity, reducing unnecessary resource use, lowering production costs, and promoting sustainable agricultural production. However, farmers’ adoption of such practices may depend on their access to relevant information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and advisory support from extension personnel. The study will assess the nature and extent of extension services available to farmers and determine the level of adoption of resource-efficient farm practices. It will examine extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, group meetings, advisory communication, and provision of technical information. The study will also identify resource-efficient practices adopted by farmers, including efficient water management, appropriate application of farm inputs, improved soil management, labour-saving techniques, and proper use of farm machinery and equipment. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and their adoption of resource-efficient farm practices. Data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of resource-efficient farm practices. The study is expected to find that farmers who have regular access to extension services demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of resource-efficient farm practices. Extension contact may improve farmers’ understanding of the benefits and appropriate application of efficient farming techniques, while practical demonstrations and advisory support may increase their confidence in adopting new practices. Nevertheless, factors such as inadequate extension personnel, limited access to farm inputs, financial constraints, poor infrastructure, and insufficient training may affect farmers’ ability to adopt recommended practices. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations on the role of extension services in promoting efficient resource utilization in agricultural production. Strengthening extension delivery through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and timely technical advice may encourage wider adoption of resource-efficient practices among farmers. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to increased adoption of resource-efficient farm practices by providing farmers with relevant knowledge, skills, and technical support. It will recommend improved accessibility and frequency of extension services, increased use of practical demonstrations, and greater collaboration between extension personnel and farmers to promote efficient and sustainable use of agricultural resources.
