Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of On-Farm Weather Monitoring
Abstract
The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of on-farm weather monitoring. On-farm weather monitoring provides farmers with localized information on weather conditions such as rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and other environmental factors that influence agricultural activities. Access to timely and reliable weather information can assist farmers in making informed decisions and managing weather-related risks in crop production. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to on-farm weather monitoring and determine the extent to which extension personnel provide information and practical guidance on monitoring weather conditions. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of on-farm weather monitoring practices and determine how farmers use locally observed weather information in planning and managing their agricultural activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of on-farm weather monitoring. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have regular contact with extension personnel are more likely to adopt on-farm weather monitoring practices. Extension services are expected to improve farmers’ knowledge of weather indicators and encourage the use of simple weather monitoring tools and techniques. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to weather monitoring equipment, insufficient technical knowledge, and the cost of some monitoring devices may constitute major constraints to adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, meteorological institutions, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension services in promoting localized weather monitoring among farmers. The findings may also support the development of extension programmes that provide practical training on the use and interpretation of on-farm weather information. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to increased adoption of on-farm weather monitoring among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on weather monitoring, improving farmers’ access to affordable monitoring equipment, and promoting collaboration between agricultural extension and meteorological institutions to provide timely and understandable weather information for improved farm management.
