Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Nursery Watering Schedules

Abstract

Sesame intercropping is an important crop production practice that can support efficient use of farmland, improve crop diversification, and provide farmers with additional opportunities for food and income generation. Proper intercropping management requires adequate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, nutrient management, weed control, and harvesting. Extension education can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt appropriate sesame intercropping practices.  This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate sesame intercropping practices. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping, farmers’ knowledge, crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, planting time, soil fertility management, weed management, crop competition, pest management, harvesting, and adoption of recommended intercropping practices. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive practical training, demonstrations, and regular advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of suitable crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, and management practices. The study may also indicate that access to timely technical information contributes to more effective application of sesame intercropping techniques. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote crop diversification and efficient use of farmland. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes on suitable intercropping arrangements and management practices. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, weed management, and harvesting practices to support sustainable sesame production.
