Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Machinery Operating Checklists

Abstract

Agricultural machinery plays an important role in improving farm efficiency, reducing labour requirements, and supporting timely completion of farm operations. However, improper operation of farm machinery can result in equipment damage, reduced performance, accidents, and unnecessary operating costs. Machinery operating checklists provide farmers with systematic guidance for carrying out pre-operation inspections, safe operation, routine adjustments, and post-operation procedures. Extension services can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical support required to understand and adopt machinery operating checklists. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of machinery operating checklists. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of machinery checklist procedures, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption and use of operating checklists during farm machinery operations. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of machinery management information provided to farmers. The study will focus on extension services, machinery operating checklists, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, pre-operation inspection, equipment adjustment, safety checks, operating procedures, routine maintenance, post-operation inspection, machinery handling, record keeping, equipment safety, and adoption of recommended checklist practices. Information will be obtained from farmers who use or have access to agricultural machinery to determine their exposure to extension services and their application of appropriate checklist procedures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of machinery operating checklists. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of machinery operating checklists. Farmers who receive regular technical guidance, practical demonstrations, and machinery-related advisory services may demonstrate greater use of pre-operation inspections, safety checks, equipment adjustments, operating procedures, and post-operation checks. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical training contribute to more consistent use of machinery operating checklists. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, machinery operators, agricultural development agencies, farm mechanization centres, equipment suppliers, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on agricultural machinery management and operational safety. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that promote systematic machinery inspection and responsible equipment operation among farmers. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of machinery operating checklists. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical demonstrations, machinery operation training, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services. Extension programmes should emphasize pre-operation inspection, safety checks, proper equipment adjustment, routine maintenance, and post-operation procedures to promote efficient and safe use of agricultural machinery.
