Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Irrigation Channel Maintenance

Abstract

Irrigation channel maintenance is an important farm management practice that supports the efficient distribution of water to agricultural fields. Regular maintenance of irrigation channels can help reduce blockages, water losses, erosion, sediment accumulation, and damage that may interfere with effective water delivery to crops. Extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, technical guidance, and practical demonstrations on appropriate irrigation channel maintenance practices. The study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of irrigation channel maintenance. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on irrigation channel maintenance, determine the extent of technical support received from extension personnel, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended maintenance practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of irrigation channel maintenance. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension services and the adoption of irrigation channel maintenance practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of irrigation channel maintenance. The study is expected to find that extension services have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of irrigation channel maintenance practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, technical advice, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater application of practices such as removing sediment and weeds, repairing damaged sections, clearing blockages, and maintaining proper water flow. However, inadequate extension contact, lack of maintenance tools, labour requirements, financial constraints, and limited technical knowledge may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, irrigation management agencies, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, and farmers’ associations. Improved extension support may strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in maintaining irrigation channels, contributing to more efficient water distribution, reduced irrigation losses, improved farm productivity, and better utilization of irrigation infrastructure. The study will conclude that effective extension services are important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate irrigation channel maintenance practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to maintenance tools and materials, and continuous technical support to encourage proper maintenance and sustainable use of irrigation channels.
