Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Harvest Hygiene Practices

Abstract

Harvest hygiene practices are important components of agricultural production and postharvest management because they help maintain the cleanliness, quality, and safety of harvested agricultural produce. Appropriate hygiene during harvesting can reduce contamination caused by dirty equipment, unclean hands, unsuitable containers, and poor handling conditions. Extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance on recommended harvest hygiene practices. The study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of harvest hygiene practices. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on harvest hygiene, determine the extent of extension support received by farmers, examine the level of adoption of recommended harvest hygiene practices, and identify the major factors influencing farmers’ adoption of these practices. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension services and the adoption of harvest hygiene practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of harvest hygiene practices. The study is expected to find that extension services have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of harvest hygiene practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, technical advice, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater application of recommended hygiene practices during harvesting. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited access to clean harvesting materials, insufficient water and sanitation facilities, labour constraints, and limited knowledge may restrict adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural production and food safety. Strengthened extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in harvest hygiene, thereby contributing to improved produce quality, safer handling, and reduced contamination and postharvest losses. The study will conclude that effective extension services are important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate harvest hygiene practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical field demonstrations, continuous farmer training, improved access to clean harvesting materials, and regular technical support to encourage proper hygiene during harvesting and improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.
