Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Crop Canopy Management

Abstract

Crop canopy management is an important component of crop production because appropriate management of plant leaves, branches, spacing, and canopy structure can influence light interception, air circulation, crop growth, and productivity. Poor canopy management may result in excessive shading, restricted air movement, inefficient use of available resources, and reduced crop performance. Extension services can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical guidance required to understand and adopt appropriate crop canopy management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of crop canopy management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended canopy management techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to farmers concerning crop canopy management. The study will focus on extension services, crop canopy management, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, plant spacing, pruning, thinning, training, branch management, leaf management, light interception, air circulation, plant population management, and adoption of recommended canopy management practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their crop production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of crop canopy management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended crop canopy management practices. Farmers who receive regular extension advice, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate spacing, pruning, thinning, training, and branch management practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to better management of crop canopy structure and overall crop development. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving crop management and farm productivity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in managing crop canopy structure. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving farmers’ adoption of crop canopy management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services on canopy management. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate spacing, pruning, thinning, training, and plant population management to support effective crop growth and sustainable agricultural production.
