Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Tool Sharpening Practices

Abstract

Agricultural tools are essential for carrying out various farm operations such as land preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, pruning, and postharvest handling. Proper sharpening of farm tools is important for maintaining their efficiency, reducing the effort required during farm operations, improving the quality of farm work, and extending tool service life. However, farmers may neglect regular sharpening or use inappropriate sharpening methods due to inadequate technical knowledge and limited access to advisory information. Extension services can provide farmers with practical knowledge and guidance on appropriate agricultural tool sharpening practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural tool sharpening practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended tool sharpening methods, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate sharpening practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to farmers regarding agricultural tool maintenance. The study will focus on extension services, agricultural tool sharpening, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, sharpening frequency, sharpening equipment, sharpening techniques, tool maintenance, blade condition, safe sharpening practices, tool efficiency, tool durability, and adoption of recommended maintenance practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in maintaining and sharpening agricultural tools. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of agricultural tool sharpening practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate agricultural tool sharpening practices. Farmers who receive regular technical advice, practical demonstrations, and training may demonstrate greater use of suitable sharpening equipment and techniques, appropriate sharpening frequency, and safer tool maintenance procedures. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to improved tool efficiency, durability, and maintenance practices among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm equipment suppliers, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote proper maintenance of agricultural tools. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical demonstrations on sharpening techniques that are affordable, safe, and suitable for commonly used farm tools. The study concludes that extension services can provide important technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of agricultural tool sharpening practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstrations, and follow-up advisory services on appropriate tool sharpening and maintenance. Extension programmes should emphasize the selection and use of suitable sharpening equipment, correct sharpening techniques, safety precautions, and regular maintenance to improve the efficiency and durability of agricultural tools.
