Effect of Extension Education on Poultry Farmers’ Adoption of Egg Handling Hygiene

Abstract

Egg handling hygiene is an important aspect of poultry production because proper handling practices help maintain egg quality, reduce contamination, and protect consumers from foodborne hazards. Poor hygiene during egg collection, cleaning, sorting, packaging, transportation, and storage may contribute to physical damage, microbial contamination, and deterioration of egg quality. Extension education can provide poultry farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt appropriate egg handling hygiene practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on poultry farmers’ adoption of egg handling hygiene practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of recommended egg handling hygiene practices, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate handling procedures. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of hygiene information provided to poultry farmers. The study will focus on extension education, egg handling hygiene, poultry farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, egg collection, hand hygiene, equipment sanitation, egg cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging, storage, transportation, contamination prevention, and adoption of recommended hygiene practices. Information will be obtained from poultry farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their egg handling activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected poultry farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of egg handling hygiene practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve poultry farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended egg handling hygiene practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate better application of hygienic egg collection, equipment sanitation, sorting, grading, packaging, storage, and transportation practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to improved awareness and application of measures for preventing contamination and maintaining egg quality. The study will be useful to poultry farmers, agricultural extension agents, poultry development organizations, food safety agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving egg handling and food safety practices among poultry farmers. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that address specific hygiene challenges in egg production and marketing. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving poultry farmers’ adoption of egg handling hygiene practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on hygienic egg handling. Extension programmes should emphasize proper collection, cleaning, sorting, packaging, storage, transportation, and contamination prevention to support improved egg quality and food safety.
