Effect of Extension Education on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Pasture Establishment Practices

Abstract

Pasture establishment is an important component of livestock production because the availability of good-quality pasture provides livestock with feed and supports improved animal health, productivity, and sustainable farm management. Proper pasture establishment requires adequate knowledge of land preparation, selection of suitable forage species, seed or planting material selection, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed control, and pasture maintenance. Extension education can provide livestock farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt appropriate pasture establishment practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on livestock farmers’ adoption of pasture establishment practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of recommended pasture establishment techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of improved pasture establishment practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of pasture management information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on extension education, pasture establishment, livestock farmers, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, forage species selection, land preparation, seed selection, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed control, pasture maintenance, and adoption of recommended pasture establishment practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in establishing and managing pasture on their farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of pasture establishment practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended pasture establishment practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate forage selection, land preparation, planting, spacing, soil fertility management, weed control, and pasture maintenance practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical training contribute to farmers’ ability to establish productive and sustainable pasture resources. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, agricultural research institutions, pastoral organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving pasture establishment and livestock feed management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying specific pasture establishment practices that require greater attention during farmer training and advisory activities. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of pasture establishment practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer education, practical demonstrations, field visits, and follow-up advisory services for livestock producers. Extension programmes should emphasize suitable forage selection, proper land preparation, planting methods, soil fertility management, weed control, and pasture maintenance to support sustainable livestock production and improved availability of quality livestock feed.
