Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Storage Pest Inspection Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of storage pest inspection practices. Regular inspection for storage pests is an important post-harvest management practice that enables farmers to detect pest activity early, protect stored agricultural produce, and reduce avoidable storage losses. Proper pest inspection can also help farmers maintain produce quality and take timely measures when signs of infestation are identified. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt storage pest inspection practices following extension education. Specific areas will include regular inspection of stored produce, checking storage areas for signs of pest activity, examining damaged or infested produce, monitoring pest droppings and other indicators, inspecting storage containers and structures, separating affected produce, recording inspection observations, and conducting follow-up inspections. Extension education is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for carrying out systematic pest inspections. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education, knowledge of storage pest inspection, and adoption of relevant inspection practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes to farmers’ adoption of storage pest inspection practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to conduct regular inspections, recognize signs of pest activity, examine stored produce and storage structures, separate affected produce, record inspection findings, and carry out follow-up checks. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of storage pest inspection practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension education in improving storage pest monitoring. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ ability to identify pest problems early and protect stored agricultural produce from avoidable losses. The study will conclude that effective extension education can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of storage pest inspection practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, inspection exercises, advisory visits, and follow-up support on regular pest inspection, recognition of infestation signs, storage structure checks, documentation of observations, and appropriate responses to detected pest problems.
