Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Seedling Spacing Practices
Abstract
Seedling spacing is an important crop production practice because appropriate spacing provides seedlings with sufficient access to sunlight, water, nutrients, and air circulation, thereby supporting healthy growth and development. Improper spacing may result in overcrowding, competition for resources, poor plant development, increased pest and disease pressure, and reduced crop productivity. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply recommended seedling spacing practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of seedling spacing practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their adoption of recommended seedling spacing practices. It will examine farmers’ participation in extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, advisory services, and educational activities relating to seedling establishment and crop management. The study will also assess farmers’ application of appropriate spacing between seedlings and rows according to crop requirements and production conditions. The study will focus on extension education, farmers, seedling spacing, seedling establishment, crop growth, planting density, row spacing, plant spacing, seedling management, crop productivity, farm management, and agricultural production practices. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended spacing practices and the sources through which they obtain information on seedling management. The study will also identify challenges that may affect farmers’ adoption of appropriate spacing practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of recommended seedling spacing practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of seedling spacing practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical extension education may demonstrate greater knowledge and improved application of appropriate plant and row spacing. The study may also reveal that practical demonstrations, regular extension contact, access to technical information, and follow-up advisory services contribute to farmers’ ability to apply recommended spacing practices effectively. Inadequate technical knowledge, limited extension contact, and difficulties in measuring appropriate spacing may constrain adoption among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in crop production. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes on seedling establishment and crop management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical demonstrations that help farmers understand the appropriate spacing requirements of different crops and improve field establishment. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of appropriate seedling spacing practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should provide regular training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on recommended seedling and plant spacing. Extension programmes should emphasize practical measurement and crop-specific spacing requirements to support proper crop establishment, healthy plant development, and improved agricultural productivity.
